Early Friday morning in northern Washington, 14 million bees escaped after a truck overturns in Washington state. This accident involved a tractor-trailer carrying over 70,000 pounds of pollinator hives in Whatcom County, near the Canadian border.

Authorities say the truck overturned on Weidkamp Road around 4 a.m. The hives were dislodged shortly after 9 a.m., freeing the bees. The sheriff’s office closed the road for nearly 24 hours so the bees could re-hive and locate their queen.

Over two dozen beekeepers worked hard to rescue the bees. Initially, officials believed 250 million bees escaped, but experts later corrected it to 14 million. Most bees have returned to their hives, which were recovered and restored for safe use.

The sheriff’s office has warned the public to stay at least 600 feet away. While there’s no general health risk, those with bee allergies should be cautious. For additional guidance, visit the Washington State Department of Health’s page on bees and wasps.

This accident underscores the need for safe transport of commercial goods. Trucking companies have a duty to ensure secure loads and safe driving.
