Heavy snowfall and treacherous conditions led to multiple crashes and spinouts along eastbound I-90 near Snoqualmie Pass this week, causing significant travel disruptions and safety concerns.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) temporarily closed I-90 east of the Snoqualmie Pass summit on Tuesday night after a series of weather-related accidents. The roadway initially closed at milepost 48 and later again at milepost 47, reopening after 7:30 p.m. Westbound lanes remained open, but chain requirements and restrictions on oversize vehicles were enforced. Drivers encountered snow, slush, and icy conditions throughout the area.

Dangerous Road Conditions Lead to Closures

Winter storm warnings remain in effect through Thursday afternoon, with the National Weather Service forecasting up to two additional feet of snow across Washington’s Cascade mountain passes. Stevens Pass recorded the highest accumulation with 23 inches of snow in 24 hours, while Snoqualmie Pass saw approximately 10 inches. These hazardous conditions have created a serious risk for drivers.

Currently, traction tires are advised and chains are required on many mountain routes. You can check live requirements and conditions here: WSDOT Tires and Chains Requirements.

Blewett Pass and White Pass also reported collisions and challenging conditions, including compact snow, slush, and ice. Oversize vehicles are prohibited in these areas, and traction devices are mandatory for most vehicles.

While adverse weather contributes to roadway hazards, drivers are still legally obligated to exercise reasonable care. Failing to drive appropriately for conditions—such as speeding on icy roads, not using required chains, or following too closely—can constitute negligence under Washington law.

If you are injured by the negligence of another during winter driving conditions, you may be entitled to compensation for your medical expenses, lost income, and pain and suffering. Blanford Law can help you understand your rights and pursue a claim.
