In a startling incident on a snowy Saturday afternoon, two individuals sustained injuries from a single vehicle rollover crash on Interstate 90. The accident occurred five miles west of Ellensburg, drawing immediate attention from emergency services and passersby.

The Accident Details

A 2001 Ford F-150 pickup truck, driven by 26-year-old Johnny Serrano Salgado of Union Gap, was heading westbound when it unexpectedly rolled over, coming to rest in the eastbound lanes of the highway. The cause of the rollover is still under investigation, but initial reports suggest that Salgado may face a citation. Importantly, drugs or alcohol were ruled out as factors in the crash.

Passenger’s Narrow Escape

In a fortunate turn of events, 26-year-old Arceli Zagal of Yakima, who was a passenger in the truck, was ejected during the accident. In what can only be described as a miraculous escape, Zagal landed on a fresh pile of snow, significantly reducing the severity of her injuries. Trooper Jeremy Weber noted that initially, they feared her injuries would be much more severe, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

Emergency Response and Hospitalization

Both Salgado and Zagal were transported to Kittitas Valley Hospital for treatment of their injuries. The quick response of emergency services played a crucial role in ensuring their immediate medical care.

Investigation Underway

The Washington State Patrol is conducting a thorough investigation into the causes of the accident. The snowy conditions of the road are being considered a key factor in the crash, raising concerns about winter driving safety.

A Reminder of Winter Driving Hazards

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with driving in snowy conditions. Drivers are urged to exercise caution, particularly on highways like I-90 during the winter months. The fortunate outcome for Zagal in this accident underscores the unpredictable nature of road safety in adverse weather conditions.

The I-90 rollover crash is a significant incident, not only for its impact on those involved but also as a cautionary tale for winter drivers. It highlights the importance of adhering to safety protocols and being prepared for the unexpected on snowy roads. The investigation’s findings will likely provide further insights into improving road safety during winter.
