Semi Truck Fuel Spill DuPont Crash Shuts Down I-5

A serious semi truck fuel spill DuPont incident caused major disruption early Wednesday morning, when a commercial truck crashed into barriers along Interstate 5 near DuPont, Washington.

According to the Washington State Patrol (WSP), the crash occurred around 3 a.m. as the truck approached the Steilacoom-DuPont Road exit. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, veered to the right, and collided with multiple concrete barriers lining the highway.

The impact caused significant damage and led to a hazardous fuel spill across the roadway.

Fuel Spill Forces Lane Closures and Emergency Response

Authorities reported that up to 100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled onto the northbound lanes of I-5. As a result, all lanes were shut down for more than two hours while emergency crews worked to contain the spill and clear debris.

Cleanup crews also had to reposition damaged barriers and ensure the roadway was safe for travel. By approximately 5:30 a.m., all lanes were reopened.

Incidents like this highlight the dangers associated with large commercial vehicles, particularly when hazardous materials such as fuel are involved.

Common Causes of Semi-Truck Accidents in Washington

Truck accidents like this one can happen for a variety of reasons, many of which involve negligence. Under Washington law, injured victims may have the right to seek compensation if another party’s negligence caused the crash.

Common causes include:

Driver Error or Fatigue

Long hours on the road can lead to fatigue, slower reaction times, and poor decision-making.

Improper Vehicle Maintenance

Brake failure, tire blowouts, or steering issues can result in catastrophic loss of control.

Speeding or Unsafe Driving Conditions

Driving too fast for road or weather conditions increases the likelihood of serious crashes.

Hazardous Material Risks

Fuel spills, like in this case, add an extra layer of danger due to fire risk and environmental hazards.

What to Do After a Truck Accident in Washington

If you are involved in a truck accident, it is important to protect both your health and your legal rights:

  • Seek medical attention immediately
  • Report the accident to law enforcement
  • Document the scene if possible
  • Avoid speaking with insurance adjusters without legal advice
  • Consult an experienced personal injury attorney

Washington follows a comparative fault system, meaning your compensation may be reduced if you are partially at fault—but you can still recover damages.
