The Swauk Fire is currently burning on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest near U.S. Highway 97 in Kittitas County, Washington. This wildfire, caused by a motor vehicle accident, started late Sunday afternoon and has already scorched approximately 100 acres. The fire is located about two miles north of Lauderdale Junction, roughly 13 miles northeast of Cle Elum.
In response to the rapid spread of the Swauk Fire, the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office has issued evacuation notices for nearby residents:
- Level 2 Evacuations (Get Set): Deer Gulch in the Liberty area.
- Level 1 Evacuations (Be Ready): Liberty area and Harkness Road.
Residents in these areas should remain vigilant, prepare to leave if necessary, and stay updated on local emergency announcements.
While US 97 remains open, motorists should expect delays due to firefighting operations. Flagger-controlled traffic is in place to ensure the safety of drivers, firefighters, and equipment in the area.
Fire crews, including over 50 firefighters, have been working overnight to contain the wildfire. Three additional engines and a 20-person crew are scheduled to arrive today. Helicopters and air tankers are also assisting in the firefighting efforts, as dry conditions and the fire’s proximity to the highway continue to pose significant challenges.
As the fire is still growing, the situation remains fluid. Motorists and residents in the affected areas are urged to follow evacuation orders and avoid the fire zone if possible.
For the latest updates, including evacuation status and road closures, stay tuned to the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office and other local news outlets.
