The crash happened at about 10:00 a.m. west of Preston-Fall City Road Southeast, near milepost 21.
According to the Washington State Patrol (WSP), one car was stopped in the westbound lanes of I-90 to avoid debris in the roadway when it was struck from behind by a second car. The impact caused both cars to catch fire.
One person was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Several other people were treated for minor injuries at the scene.
The westbound lanes of I-90 were closed for about three hours while crews cleared the scene. All lanes were reopened by 1:00 p.m.
This is the second accident to block westbound I-90 near Preston in the past two weeks. On August 2, a crash involving multiple semi-trucks closed the westbound lanes for about six hours.
The recent accidents are a reminder of the dangers of driving in construction zones. Drivers should slow down and be extra cautious when driving through construction zones.
