Westbound I-90 Reopens After I-90 Semi-Truck Fire Near Cle Elum

Drivers traveling across central Washington experienced major delays after an I-90 semi-truck fire forced the closure of a significant stretch of westbound Interstate 90 near Cle Elum. The incident occurred during the early morning hours of Thursday and resulted in traffic disruptions lasting nearly six hours while emergency crews worked to extinguish the fire, remove debris, and inspect nearby infrastructure.

According to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), westbound I-90 was closed between milepost 106 near Ellensburg and milepost 86.6 near Cle Elum beginning around 2:26 a.m. The highway reopened shortly before noon after crews completed cleanup efforts and conducted preliminary bridge inspections.

What Happened During the Semi-Truck Fire?

Authorities reported that a commercial semi-truck caught fire on westbound I-90 near Cle Elum. Images released by WSDOT showed the truck almost completely destroyed by the blaze. In several photographs, an excavator could be seen dismantling the burned remains of the truck so they could be loaded onto a flatbed trailer and removed from the roadway.

The severity of the fire raised concerns about potential structural damage to a nearby bridge. Transportation officials spent several hours assessing the bridge before allowing traffic to resume through the area.

At this time, officials have not released information regarding injuries, nor have they announced what caused the truck fire. The cause remains under investigation.

Traffic Impacts and Detours

The closure created significant disruptions for travelers heading west through Snoqualmie Pass and central Washington.

Initially, drivers were detoured from Interstate 90 at Exit 106 onto State Route 10. As the response continued, WSDOT advised motorists to use U.S. Highway 97 as an alternate route.

The incident serves as a reminder of how quickly a commercial vehicle emergency can affect transportation corridors throughout Washington State. Interstate 90 is one of the state’s most heavily traveled highways, carrying both passenger vehicles and commercial freight traffic across the Cascade Mountains.

The Importance of Commercial Vehicle Safety

Large commercial trucks play a critical role in Washington’s economy, but they can also present serious risks when mechanical failures, cargo issues, or maintenance problems occur. Fires involving semi-trucks can spread rapidly due to fuel systems, cargo materials, and the size of the vehicle.

When a truck fire occurs, investigators often examine factors such as:

Mechanical Failures

Brake malfunctions, engine problems, or electrical system failures can sometimes lead to vehicle fires.

Maintenance Issues

Federal and state regulations require commercial carriers to properly inspect and maintain their vehicles. Failure to comply with these requirements can create dangerous conditions on Washington roadways.

Certain cargo materials may increase fire risks if improperly secured or transported.

As investigators continue examining the Cle Elum incident, officials will work to determine whether any mechanical or operational factors contributed to the fire.

Washington State Patrol Investigates Serious Highway Incidents

The Washington State Patrol frequently assists with major highway incidents, including commercial vehicle crashes and fires. Drivers can learn more about traffic safety, collision investigations, and highway enforcement by visiting the Washington State Patrol website:

While no injuries have been reported from this incident, crashes and fires involving commercial trucks can lead to devastating injuries. Victims may face extensive medical expenses, lost income, and long-term recovery challenges.

Washington law allows injured individuals to pursue compensation when another party’s negligence causes harm. Depending on the circumstances, responsible parties may include truck drivers, trucking companies, maintenance providers, or manufacturers.
