In a devastating incident that unfolded on a Washington highway, a man from Renton is being held responsible for a fatal wrong-way collision near Ellensburg. This tragic accident, involving a 1995 Ford F150 and a 2012 Hyundai Sonata, resulted in the death of a Wapato man and serious injuries to a female passenger.

The Fatal Incident

According to the Washington State Patrol, the collision occurred on I-82, approximately two miles east of Ellensburg. The incident took place late on Saturday, just after 10 p.m. The Renton man, aged 57, was reportedly driving the Ford F150 westbound in the eastbound lanes. Near milepost 1, he collided head-on with the Hyundai Sonata, which was traveling eastbound.

Casualties and Injuries

Tragically, the 40-year-old male driver of the Hyundai, hailing from Wapato, was killed in the crash. His passenger, a 40-year-old woman also from Wapato, sustained injuries and was promptly transported to Kittitas Valley Hospital for treatment. Reports confirm that both the deceased and the injured passenger were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident.

Renton Driver’s Condition

The Renton driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, suffered injuries as well and was taken to the same hospital. His current condition has not been disclosed, but the consequences of the crash underscore the importance of seatbelt use.

Ongoing Investigation

As the investigation continues, the Washington State Patrol has indicated that drugs or alcohol may have played a role in this tragic event. The precise cause of the crash is still under investigation, and further details are awaited.
