On Monday morning, a motorcycle accident on Interstate 90 near Kittitas left a Utah man injured and transported to Wenatchee Valley Hospital. The crash occurred at approximately 8:40 a.m., according to the Washington State Patrol (WSP).

Details of the Accident

Troopers report that 52-year-old Jason Hale of West Jordan, Utah, was traveling eastbound when an unsecured load became lodged between his motorcycle’s axle and wheel. This mechanical obstruction caused Hale to lose control of the bike, leading to a crash.

Although Hale was wearing a helmet—likely preventing more serious injury—WSP noted that he was riding with a suspended license. He was taken to Wenatchee Valley Hospital for treatment of his injuries. At this time, it is not known whether drugs or alcohol contributed to the incident.

Unsecured Loads and Washington Law

Washington law RCW 46.61.655 – Dropping load, other materials — Covering requires all drivers to secure their loads so that no portion is likely to escape, shift, or fall from the vehicle. The statute applies to both commercial and non-commercial drivers, including motorcyclists.

Violating this law can result in fines, civil liability, and—in cases involving injury or death—criminal charges. Even when a mechanical failure or unsecured load is the primary cause, liability may still fall on a negligent party. For example, if the unsecured load was due to faulty installation, improper maintenance, or negligence by another driver, the injured party may have grounds to pursue compensation.

Motorcyclists face unique hazards on Washington roads, including debris, weather conditions, and inattentive drivers. Wearing a helmet, as Hale did, significantly reduces the risk of head injury, but it cannot fully protect against mechanical issues or another motorist’s negligence.
